Owl Post: Professor Thirwall [Oct. 1st, 2004|10:49 am]
Professor Thirwall,

Thank you, sir, this is wonderful news!

I believe the promise of a hunt will be enough motivation for Mr MacNair. However, I will happily take responsibility for helping him in any way I can.

I will speak to him this afternoon between classes and we will both see you this afternoon. I have all sorts of questions.

Sleepless again.

It doesn't help that every time I close my eyes I think about last night.

I meant it when I told Lucius and Martin that I never thought about kissing. I don't. Or I didn't.

Oh, I'd thought about Roddy being so precocious as to have kissed both a boy and a girl at only thirteen years-old. I'd thought about how ridiculous Zamira and Margaret were giggling over what it would be like to kiss different boys (and teachers too!). I'd never thought about kissing anyone myself, though.

So I wasn't lying when I said it. I'd be lying if I said it now, though.

It's all I think about now. I'm worse than all of them! I'm a hypocrite and a fool! They'd all tease me something terrible if they knew, and I'd deserve every bit of it.

Oh, but kissing is wonderful!

I thought you might be interested to know that I spoke to Professor Gregory today.

The plan to introduce the first years to suitable distraction, and subsequently to encourage the sharing of said distractions with their elders, proved more successful than I had hoped. Even Lucius has deigned to help Mr. Snape learn chess.

Of course, he had to make a fuss first. Very irritating. And after he had been so nice the weekend before. I shouldn't be surprised. Most likely, he thought he could charm me into agreeing to something - he even went so far as to tell me I was "very" pretty! - and, upon realising that he wasn't likely to succeed, he reverted to his usual antagonism.

He wanted me to take Martin's flirtations seriously. I wish I knew what benefit he had hoped to gain from it. I suppose it doesn't matter now.

The best thing to come of my little project was MacNair's idea for a hunt at Hogwarts. His enthusiasm was contagious and most everyone seems excited by the prospect. It would take a great deal of time and effort to organise, but I think it would do us all good.

Professor Thirwall hasn't responded to the note I sent him on the subject, which I can only take as a hopeful sign, as I'm sure I would have heard from him before now if he opposed the idea. Perhaps he's taken it to Professor Dumbledore, or even the Board of Governors!

I am just as bad as the younger students, getting my hopes up too early.

Professor Thirwall,

I am not sure if you have a journal of your own, or if you have some other way of following them. Last night, Mr. MacNair and I had an interesting discussion involving the possibility of holding a hunt at Hogwarts this term.

Mr. MacNair has a great deal of experience in this area, as you may know, and has offered to be in charge, with myself as his assistant. We would, of course, work with the groundsman during both planning and execution.

I think a hunt would be an excellent way to engage and educate the students. Also I must say sir, I have never seen Mr. MacNair so animated. I think this may be just the thing to draw him out of his shell.

Do you think it would be possible, sir? I am more than willing to take responsibility for presenting the idea to Headmaster Dumbledore and the groundsman, but I did not wish to proceed without your approval.

Sincerely,
Andromeda Delphinia Black

[Current Mood | optimistic]

Another weekend is upon us, and I thought it might be fun to have a few activities in which all Slytherins may participate, regardless of year.

For example, I know that I am not the only member of our house who enjoys Muggle literature. I thought perhaps, we could get together to discuss which books we've read and which we'd recommend. If you have never read anything Muggle, have no fear; I picked up a number of books while I was in Hogsmeade last weekend with the intention of loaning them to any who are interested.

If Muggle literature does not strike your fancy, then perhaps you enjoy chess? Lucius Malfoy has been kind enough to teach anyone who wishes to learn. If you all ready know how to play, why not challenge him to a game? I am sure he is tired of playing with me, as I am mediocre at best.

Feel free to share any other hobbies you have, as I am sure that there will be other students who would be interested.

Lucius,

I hope you will forgive me for giving you Muggle literature for your birthday. I saw the title and immediately thought of you. I haven't read it yet, but it is on the reading list for NEWTs Muggle Studies, so it must be of some worth. Read it first, then you can tell me what a waste it was. At the very least, you'll have material to use against me in the next round of debate.

Wishing you many returns of the day,

Andromeda Black

11 September 2004 (warded to all Slytherin students) [Sep. 12th, 2004|12:20 am]
I've had such a wonderful birthday!

Altair arrived first thing this morning with a letter and a... thing I don't know what to call it but it was a present from Mother and Daddy and it's lovely with pictures in a globe of all the people and things I love best at home. Everyone was very nice today and some of the students and teachers remembered and gave me good wishes and many returns of the day which was especially nice as not all of them were Slytherins. Then there was the gathering this evening which I know was not only for me but for all us fifths, but maybe it was just a little because Lucius made a toast to me and gave me the sweetest little falcon on a... on a... on a thing whose name I can't remember at the moment, but the point is that the little falcon on top is the very image of Valkenswaard, whom I miss so very much while I am here at school. And Martin gave me a poem which he wrote all on his own he says! Crabbe gave me the biggest hug and even Dolores I could see was trying very hard not to spoil everyone's fun and she didn't! I have the sweetest friends and I love them all!

I am for bed now as I am ever so tired, but I could not sleep before I had thanked all of you for such a lovely birthday!

10 September 1971: Warded to Mary Avery [Sep. 10th, 2004|08:36 pm]
Mary,

I hope you don't mind me shifting to this format for our discussion.

Thank you for the offer of books. Do you happen to have anything by someone called Kipling? I have only just learned that Mr. Snape (of the feral firsties) has a fondness for muggle literature himself. He particularly mentioned Kipling. I hope you do not mind that I mentioned your name to him. I am hoping that this may be a way of introducing him to some of our less feral Slytherins.

I would very much like to meet your uncle, thank you. I also feel quite sure that Cissa would enjoy seeing more of you over the summer. I will mention it in my next letter home. It will give me time to wear down any resistance! Your parents wouldn't mind would they?

Owl Post to Mary Avery (warded) [Sep. 10th, 2004|06:14 pm]
Mary,

Thank you. It means a great deal to me that not everyone thinks I am mad. If only your brother had half your sense. However, it gives me great hope that there are those families which count themselves Slytherin and which feel the same as I.

Your uncle's job must be fascinating! Does he share many stories with you?

You mustn't worry about being too informal with me. You are Cissa's dearest friend, which makes you almost family.

You may trust your secret as safe with me.

9 September 1971: Warded to Professor Thirwall, all Slytherin prefects and 1-4 year students. [Sep. 9th, 2004|07:34 pm]
Having spoken with the senior prefects, I have agreed to cease my campaign to have the word mudblood banned from use.

However, the word is still repugnant to me personally. All of Slytherin is aware of this now. Therefore, I must assume that any lower year who says it in my hearing does so as an act of disrespect and defiance. In such cases, I shall be taking the appropriate disciplinary action.

[Current Mood | determined]

I have been officially spoken to by the seventh year prefects. There is to be no more discussion of banning the word mudblood, lest I wish to risk a public caning for disrespecting my elders. I suppose I am a coward for not standing firm on the issue, even in the face of such opposition, but then I was not sorted Gryffindor. I am Slytherin and will proceed as such. If respect for elders is used against me, I will turn it to suit my goals as well.

I suppose it was too bold a move, made too soon. I knew it would not be easy and I won't let this dissuade me. I have the next three years to reform Slytherin. I just need to remember to take smaller steps for now.

Lucius is organising a "gathering" for the fifth years on Saturday. Over these journals, it is near impossible to tell if he remembers that it will be my birthday and is playing with me, or if it is merely a happy coincident. I suppose it does not really matter. We fifth years will be celebrating something together, that's what is important.

1 September, 1971 [Sep. 2nd, 2004|12:32 am]
Actually, I think it might be the second by now. What a long day! We've arrived though, and all are settled in at last. Thank goodness.

Cissa continues play the prissy little lady, though perhaps to better effect than when we were last in the dungeons. I am so glad to see she is still friends with Mary Avery. She's such a sweet girl, and has a far better chance at providing a positive influence in that quarter than I have. She might even get Cissa to think of something beyond boys and her tatting.

Bella was sullen and temperamental from the moment she woke up to the time I saw her safely tucked away in her dorm. She's such an intolerable brat. I don't know what I'm going to do with her. She doesn't seem to get on with any of the other girls and was rather cruel to the little girl with the scars. Livia, I think it is. I really must learn all their names. Perhaps a chart would be of help.

Despite Bella's best efforts, however, I think cousin Sirius has already won the prize for trouble-making this term. Imagine, that little beast in Gryffindor! I've little doubt how my aunt Black is going to react. Likely to be a howler with breakfast, at the very least. I must say, I am pleased beyond measure that he won't be my problem here at school. I'll have my hands quite full enough with Bella and some of the others, thank you very much.

I can hardly count Lucius as help of any kind, either. He sat like a prince on his royal arse for the whole of the trip. Not that I complained. Best if he stays on his throne and allows me to shape our house's future. Last thing anyone needs is a mass of miniature, would-be Malfoys running about the school. Slytherin would be damned for generations!
